Hernan de la Barra tends these Cabernet vines in a verdant valley, tucked between the Andes and the coastal mountain ranges. Despite an extremely early and hot season that was made especially challenging because of the ongoing drought, the vines have endured and provided very ripe fruit. The vines here benefit from a mild climate and moist soil which is perfect for grape growing. And after careful alchemy in the winery the resulting wine is beautifully structured with welcome tannins and succulent dark berry fruit.

The Pizo Cariñena is a deep-coloured, velvety wine with ripe black fruit galore. It gets its richness from very carefully limiting the yields in the vineyard, excellent soils and the ideal climate. The character it gets when expertly cultivated like it is here gives ripe bramble fruit, spice and earthy aromas. Its dark nature helps it match up beautifully with heavy dishes like beef stew and strongly flavoured game meats.

We fought good and hard to get this, with our winemaking team in Oz to help us. We have loads of Remington-liked-it-so-much-we-bought-the-company moments and this was one. A wonderful parcel of Limestone Coast Sauvignon Blanc came up, and we bought it all for a knock-off trotter price. Which is not to say the wine isn't awesome. This one is clean as a whistle and has crisp citrus and tropical fruit allure.

The Pizo series is about expression of varietal character and, at over 650m above sea level in the foothills of the Iberian Mountains, this is a perfect spot for vines to show their true charm. The south-facing aspect ripens the grapes with ease but the altitude keeps freshness at the forefront of the wine. Pizo Garnacha Blanca has an elegant combination of citrus and white flower aromas with a subtle mineral background. On the palate it has characteristic herbal notes and sour pear. Do not hold back - this is a stunner.
