The Wine The Wine
England
Region:East Anglia
East Anglia may not be the first place you think of for premium English wines but Norfolk, one of the driest and sunniest regions in the UK, is perfect for vines. That is why winemaker Ben Witchell has been passionately cultivating Flint Vineyard over the past decade. Launched in spring 2024, Flint Vineyard Charmat follows the success of his Charmat Rosé. This unique wine blends sustainably grown, aromatic varieties (Sauvignon Blanc, Reichensteiner, Bacchus, Auxerrois and a blend of other aromatic varieties) that require minimal intervention in the vineyards. Made using the Prosecco-style Charmat method, it creates a dry, fruit-driven sparkling wine that Prosecco fans keen to support local producers will adore.
The Winemaker The Winemaker
Ben Witchell
Ben’s interest in wine began as a desire to learn more about the wines of the world, but it quickly became an obsession, then a lifelong passion. This led him to quit his job in IT and find out how to become a winemaker. Ben wanted to do this properly and soon realised that he would need to study in order to learn the ropes quickly and extensively enough. He moved to Sussex and enrolled into a three-year degree in Oenology and Viticulture at Plumpton College. This greatly influenced his approach to wine, giving him a respect for and fascination of the winemaking science.
After graduating from college in 2012 with a first class degree and achieving awards for Best Research Project and Top Winemaking Student, Ben moved to Beaujolais, France, where he secured his first winemaking post. Here, he learnt how to 'throw out the rule book' and experienced a more intuitive and creative side to winemaking. After two years it was time to return home and begin a new life making wine in England, where he established Flint Vineyard in Norfolk. Since then, Flint Vineyard has flourished. There are now over 26,000 vines covering six hectares, and a state-of-the-art winery allows for wine production at the highest level. Flint has gained a solid reputation for producing some of the best premium English wines.
"With this wine, we really wanted to champion sustainable, heritage aromatic varieties that thrive so beautifully in the English climate. Most of the fruit came from our brilliant partner vineyards in East Anglia, with a touch of Bacchus from our nearby site in Hedenham. We pressed the grapes under nitrogen to protect those delicate aromatics, and fermented a portion in neutral oak - not for flavour, but to bring a touch of texture and complexity. Secondary fermentation took place in tank, making this one of the very first wines of its kind to be produced in England." - Ben Witchell, Winemaker.
